'Recently Carol and Scott had the opportunity to purchase a home. A space that had the potential for expansion and could be remodeled to accommodate Carol's many needs, her blindness, wheelchair accessible and ease of mobility while wearing her prosthetics. The house, as it is now, is original to 1955 and poses many challenges to Carol feeling safe and comfortable in her home. With a combination of the economy, the high cost of Carol’s ongoing treatment and the tightening of lending practices, the Decker’s will not be able to renovate this home as originally planned. They have switched to a much more modest remodel, which will give them the very basic amenities for Carol to function in her home. While they stay incredibly upbeat, the home will not be ideal for Carol. Our hope is that ABC will see the inspiration this family has been to not only our community, and to our family’s, but the potential the Decker’s have to touch the hearts of people across the world.' You’ll forgive me if I indulge in my own sentiments for a moment. For there are individuals that affect your life in a truly significant way and for me, Carol is one of those few people.

I don’t recall the exact instance this clarity of understanding occurred. I do, however, remember vividly the petite, glasses wearing elementary student. A permed brunette, lover of all things purple and unicorns-- and even better yet, purple unicorns, who at the age of 8 already exuded a fashion forward confidence and magnanimous personality. People have always been drawn to Carol and I was no exception.

I am able to mentally scan through the archives of my mind, sifting through the utilitarian filing cabinets, plastic-covered bins and crowded sock drawers overflowing with the moments she and I have spent with each other, the memories we created and I am grateful.

Grateful for so much laughter, buoyed up by the stolen moments wherein we opened our souls to each other under heart-covered comforters in our parent’s living rooms. Morose over the shenanigans we survived and overwhelmed by the purely, unadulterated love that I feel for her.

Photographs from over the many years of our friendship capture many of our moments in still. Looking through these photographs I am unsurprisingly struck by the continuing recurrence of Carol and I posing next to each other, most often holding onto each other, regardless of who else might be in the photograph. This is not surprising because it is how I always wanted to be and to find that this sentiment had been caught in print for me was genuinely pleasing. These captured images still hold some of my happiest memories to date.

You see, I have always been in awe of Carol, admired her in so many ways, looked up to her and desired to emulate her. The compassion and love she exudes, the fun, fly by the seat of your pants attitude she proudly dons. The tutelary friend she has always been, the devoted mother, the ardent wife. This is the type of person I would like to be. This is the person who's friendship I sincerely treasure.

As I have had the opportunity to sit at Carol’s hospital bed, resting my hand on her shoulder, soundlessly praying for her comfort, her character of strength and solicitude has never waned.

We have cried together, we have chatted like the high school girls we once were and we have sat in silence, comforted merely by the others' presence.

Carol has been asked to face challenges that would have fell Goliath sans pebble and she continues to do so with grace and determination.

We are now both in our 30’s, mothers of small children, busy with life and there have been times where the circle of perpetual schedules has come between our contact with each other and that is something I deeply regret.

Regardless of the frequency or lack there of or the distance in miles between us, I am eternally grateful and abundantly thankful that our lives paths crossed so many years ago. To me Carol has always been and will always be one of my dearest friends, someone who holds a very special place in my heart.

In the eye of this tragedy I have never been more aware than as I am now that I am not alone in my sentiments. There are so many who care deeply for Carol, for her family, for her well-being. What a wonderful testament to the outstanding person she is to witness the outpouring of love and support that has come from so many in these past few months.

I say “Thank you” to each of you because you have reaffirmed my belief in the compassion of strangers and loved ones alike.

“Thank you” because, selfishly, I needed to do something in this situation and this Auction became that and

“Thank you” because I know Carol would want nothing more than to say it to each of you herself.

SEATTLE -- Baby Saffya is 3 months old, but her mother has no idea what she looks like. In fact, Carol Decker hasn't been able to see Saffya since her daughter's birth. That's when Carol was rushed into surgery for an emergency Cesarean section. Her husband, Scott, wasn't sure she would be able to endure it. Fortunately Carol did survive, but immediately after the surgery she developed life-threatening hypotension from a septic pneumonia infection. Doctors administered medication, but it only made things worse. Carol's body reacted by blocking the blood flow to her legs, left arm and eyes. Doctors had no choice but to amputate both of her legs below the knee and her left arm. Carol was also left blind. In just three months, the family's life had been turned upside down. What was supposed to be the happy homecoming of their baby girl has unleashed so many challenges that the family can barely keep up. "Where did this come from? How did this happen?" said Scott's mother, Joanne Decker. Scott and Carol have been trying to adjust to Carol's new life as an amputee while keeping the rest of the family going. "You know, we've got two really young kids and it's not always easy," Scott said. "There are definitely tears and hard days. These have been the hardest days of my life, definitely."Their financial problems, meanwhile, have run away from them. Medical bills have already surpassed $2 million in just three months, and there's no telling what the future will bring. "What we don't have is she (Carol) is going to have inpatient rehab that our insurance doesn't cover," Scott said. "Her family has done some fundraisers raising a decent chunk of it.""Every step has been another hurdle for her to cross," said Heath Gier, Carol's brother. "We didn't expect her to lose her sight. That was a real tough one.""Carol has shed tears and done the kissy-face bit. To me, it would be just horrible not to be able to see my babies," said Joanne. A Mother's Will to Live
KENNEWICK, Wash.
Carol Jean Vance, who's married name is now Decker, was like any other young mother and excited about having her second child.
Carol, her husband Scott, and 2-year-old daughter Chloe now live in Enumclaw. In June, Carol came down with what doctors thought was a mild case of the flu, but with early contractions and a moderate fever inspired her husband to take her back to the hospital.
What they discovered was far worse than. Carol had contracted Streptococcal Pneumonia Infection with all possible complications. All her major organs had been affected including her skin. Carol then fell into a syndrome called Disseminated Intra vascular Coagulation, or DIC, a life threatening condition that prevents a person's blood from clotting normally.
Jim Vance, Carol's father, is passionate about seeking medical help early on, if a person becomes ill. "Make an appointment with their doctor. . .insist on one more exam, one more procedure in order to never, never ever come down with this affliction"
Carol's illness resulted in her giving birth to daughter Safiya six weeks early. Because of the disease, both of Carol's legs had to be amputated from the knees down. Also her left hand had to be removed as well as her right hand ring finger. While she has lost her eyesight, doctors are optimistic that she will regain her sight eventually.
Carol's step mom Judy says when Carol returns home she'll have months of rehabilitation and lots of time to spend healing and getting used to her new prosthetics. "She is amazing so she will accomplish all that! Every day she shows us how strong she is and what she can accomplish from everything she's been through."

I had the pleasure of visiting Carol and her family for a number of days this past month and was once again astounded by her incredible strength and determination. Keeping in mind, Carol's issues with vision this message can be listened to and enjoyed by Carol directly and will only take a few minutes of your time. Little stripes of color dance inside of the stones used for these earrings. I found these buried and tangled in a box full of beads and just had to have them. Some spots on them are crystal clear, while others are packed full of pink. They look like Rutilated Quartz with pink hairs running through them.

The flat pair briolette dangles off of a sterling silver ear wire. They will dangle from your ear at a little over 1-½ inches. All of my earrings made with ear wires come with rubber backs so that you won’t lose them when you are wearing them.

Here is a lovely burnt orange bag made from a 100% merino wool sweater that I felted then stitched into a mini messenger style bag. It has a coordinating lining throughout that continues along the back of the shoulder strap. The fold-over flap fastens with a vintage brown button. Two stones were put together, but kept apart. They dangle on their own, but their colors play off of each other. Square cut pink opals hold up rainbow moonstone briolettes.

Pink opals are about 10mm in size and the rainbow moonstone is about 4.5-5mm big. They dangle in at 3 ½ inches long, with ear wire included. All of my earrings made with sterling sliver ear wires come with rubber backs so that you won’t lose them when you are wearing them.

My daughter loves reading in bed and this print was inspired by her. This little girl loves reading and her buddies Ginger and Winks love to listen.

Drawn in pen and ink on bristol board then scanned and digitally colored. All prints come signed in the lower right hand corner by me. The image measures 7 x 9 and comes printed on 8 ½ x 11 paper. This is perfect for mounting in an 8x10 opening. Printed on 100% cotton rag Museum Etching paper with archival pigment inks. Paper has a slight texture to give the image a more vintage appeal. All prints come wrapped in a cellophane sleeve tied with ribbon and a Gingerwinks hand tag ready for giving. Original Letter Press Art Work exclaims Nietzsche's most famous saying: "Become who you are". The big BE printed from a hand-carved linocut. Black text set by hand in antique wood type. The whole piece was printed one by one, by hand, on a vintage Vandercook press.
The old used wood type lends small variations in color and impression, which are a part of the appeal of this hands-on process. The gorgeous texture and impression that is characteristic of this nostalgic printing technique makes one want to stare at it all the time. The concepts in the book "When Nietzsche Wept" inspired me to do this Letterpress poster with one of Nietzsche's most famous says: "Become who you are". At the time, this phrase resonated in me. I carved a big BE in linoleum -- I wanted it to have the most emphasis on the poster. "COME WHO YOU ARE" is printed from antique wood type; "NIETZSCHE" is in metal type. The paper is Magnani Pescia, mold made in Italy from 100% cotton, chlorine-free, with neutral pH. This broadside has 1 natural deckle and 3 tear deckles (tore by hand by me). Limited edition of 50. Printed at SVC in Seattle, 10" x 20".Letterpress printed in a warm vermilion and opaque black. Mold-made Italian cotton paper, thick and luxuriously to the touch. Size: 10" x 20". June 10th Synsopsis from Scott, Carol's Husband, on what has happened

"So here is the play by play so far. I will try to sum it up as briefly as possible.

On Tuesday the 10th, I took Carol up to Swedish becuase she had been having a mild fever for a couple days, and she was going into early labor. Contractions every 3-5 minutes. It was apparent when I came home from lunch on Tuesday at 1, that I needed to take her to the hospital again.

Carol was in the hospital 2 weeks earlier for a suspected kindey stone, but never confirmed. She had been having extensive debilitating back pain, and maybe a uti ( hard for her to tell while she is pregnant for some reason). In anycase, we eventually got her home, and she seemed to be ok for a week. She still wasn't great, but we figured she was just 7 months pregnant and very uncomfortable from that.

The weekend before taking her to the hospital, she had been getting sniffly, and having a temp of 101-103. Doctors were called and we thought she just had a mild fever...take tylenol and bed rest. On Monday the 9th, Carol began complaining of severe body pain all over, not localized at all. This went along with a mild fever.

So Tuesday the 10th she has 103.7 temp, sever body pain, and contractions, we decide to take her to swedish.

Call the OB on the way, they just want her to come to their office next to swedish. Checked her, having contractions every 5 minutes but the dialtion. They immediatly scoot her to the delivery triage at swedish, who immediatly get her a room and put her on a monitor. The hospital was trying to get ready, so waited there for abit together. She was in horrendous pain, and going to the bathroom every couple minutes, and began complaining of big abdominal pain. She asked for pain medication, which she never does, they cam in with some Diluaded? I seem to remember.

After a couple minutes she began to get quiet, I figured the medicine was working so I called Carols mom to fill her in. All of sudden there are many nurses and doctors in the room, putting oxygen on Carol. Carol is awake but not responsive to me. They check her cervix and is now 3 cm dilated. They recommend a c-section.

Safiya was born about 10 minutes later at 4:51 pm....4.15lbs....17 3/8 inches. She is doing great, breathing on her own, and suckling a pacifier, and trying to eat from a bottle, but not very successfully yet.

Carol is in surgery for another 2 hours...apparently her blood pressure dropped severly. Enough that several drugs had to be used to keep it up. She was then trasnferred to the ICU, at about 7:08 pm. Where she has been since.

The details of the next few days are lengthy, but I will sum it up. The rest of that night was a battle to keep her blood pressure up, which they did by about 3 in the morning, but with several vasopressor medications. A very critical situation still. (her bp is fairly stable now, and they are trying to ween her off the med's to see if she can sustain it).

The 11th was also a very critical day. She spent the whole day fighting a fever that was generally at least 103 degrees, and for a couple hours was around 106.9 degrees. She had ice baths, blankets, etc. That is now stable at 98 degrees. Late this day, she was placed on dialysis continuously. She was not clearing any of the toxins in her body, and getting very chubby from all the fluids they are pumping into her.

They also identified what is wrong with her.
She has a Streptococcal Pnuemoniae infection. A septic infection...the worst.....with all possible complications. All major organs have been effected including her skin. The scariest part of this, is a syndrome called DIC. This has effected they way she clots, and bleeds. It's fairly complicated, but she clots where she shouldn't, so when she bleeds somewhere, all her clotting factors have been used up, so she bleeds.

This has made putting in every needle, tube, etc. very dangerous. All the clotting over her skin is starting to "boil". The hope is that these spots are just on the top layer of her skin. If they are deep, it would be like she had been on fire, and will need to be transferred to Harborviews burn unit to deminish chanced of a secondary skin infection.

On the 12 and 13th, Carol has had some improvement. We like the upward trend, no matter how small it is. The goal for this weekend is to continue (I finally figured how to unbold it :) ) losing fluids, and maintain her blood pressure. If that is successful, they want to reduce some of her sedation (oh yeah she is not in a coma or anything, just general anesthesia...versed and fentanyl for the savvy) and see if we can get a finger to move or anything."
